Gastric problems are one of the most common conditions in horses. Various studies show that 75% of sports horses suffer from mild to severe gastric ulcers. The prevalence of gastric ulcers is, however, high not only in sports horses but also in recreation horses, broodmares and even foals frequently suffer from this condition. Gastric ulcers occur because the gastric mucous is damaged by the stomach contents being too acid. The gastric acid balance can, among other things, be disturbed by too long a period without roughage (an empty stomach), a diet too high in cereals and too little saliva production. Horses with gastric ulcers often display reduced appetite, reduced performance, weight loss, a poor coat and even episodes of colic can occur.
